S.H. MALLORY
In 1878, Railroad magnate S.H. MALLORY of Chariton bought land
south of Lacona. Issac MYERS and William McKINLEY wanted the depot west
of town but there wasn’t enough room for the switches and stockyards so
MALLORY bought land south and put the depot where he wanted it. In
1880
S.H. MALLORY & J.E. McCLURG bought a grain house and moved it near
the depot for grinding grain. In 1892 MALLORY opened the first Bank of
Lacona. (Source - Chronology of the
early settlers of White Breast Township and Lacona compiled by Edith
HEEMSTRA and John FORD sometime around 1980.)
